不能是词还是短语

cannot(一个单词)是缩写can't的展开形式。

Can't也可以展开为can not(两个单词)，但是这种写法比较少见，有时只是为了强调。

For example:

I cannot do it!

Can't通常展开为cannot

I can not do it!

这样更具有强调性

当然，can和not有时也只是因为各自的搭配而碰巧挨到一起。

For example:

Kevin can not only rap but dance too.

凯文不仅能饶舌也能跳舞。

在这里，can not必须写成两个词，并不是can't的展开形式。

只有当not被用于强调时，你才需要考虑用can not而不是cannot

For example:

I can not tolerate laziness!

用两个单词的写法来使not的强调意思更加清晰明了。通常用在感叹句中，也就是结尾有感叹号的句子。

必须用Can Not的时候

将can和not作为两个单独的单词来使用时是可以出现can not的形式的，尤其是注意关联词not only...but also里这个not。

Danielle can not only cook but also bake.✔

丹妮尔不仅会做饭，而且会烤面包。

My dog can not only roll over but also play dead.✔

我的狗不仅会翻身，还会装死。

在这样的句子中，cannot是不能用的。
